the problem
- heterogeneous networks
Most of the larger networks are heterogeneous nowadays.
This means that different computer-platforms and operational systems of all kinds (mainly
Windows, various Unix derivates and Linux) are used.
- the problem increases
The variety of systems and the access rights management needed for their configuration pose a problem that increases proportionally to the size of the network.
the solution:
- Central Authentication Service
A solution for this problem is a central authentication service. The user's and administrator's access data and access rights are stored in a central database and can be managed easily that way.
- Unified Login
This way of authentication is called "Unified Login", because access rights and passwords are received from a central service whenever a login takes place.
- Single Sign On (SSO)
If other services requiring a password (like e.g. web authentication, Secure Shell (SSH), E-mail etc.) are connected to this central authentication service, this is called "Single Sign On", i.e. a single authentication.
Your advantages:
- password security
With a central authentication service, the risk of forgetting passwords or even complete login data is significantly diminished and, at the same time, it is possible to carry out global configurational changes from a single management node.
- time saving
This way, the access data of various systems can be brought up to date in a smaller amount of time, with better overview and on a higher level of security, without having to forego flexibility.
